On 3 May 2022, the grace period granted by the Minister of Employment and Vocational Training (Minefop) for Cameroonian companies employing foreign workers in an irregular situation to regularise their status expired, on pain of sanctions. Issa Tchiroma Bakary (photo) explained in a press release that “despite awareness campaigns, on-the-spot checks and formal notices sent to company directors, they continue to employ a large number of foreign workers in breach of the regulations in force”.
Acting on the government’s threat, on 11 May the inter-ministerial group responsible for combating foreign labour carried out an unannounced raid on certain companies in the town of Nanga Eboko (Centre region), as reported in the 12 May edition of the daily Cameroon Tribune. Checks carried out at Déroulage Vietnamien Cameroun (DVC), a company specialising in the processing and export of wood, revealed that the company was illegally employing Vietnamese workers. The government newspaper reports that the workers did not have employment contracts, let alone valid visas. Following the inspection, the mission imposed a fine of FCFA 6 million on the company.
